How to Stop Discount Stacking on Shopify and Protect Your Margins
By Viktoriia Pavlova · · 7 min read
Quick answer
Stacking happens when sale prices, automatic discounts and codes combine. Review Shopify's combination settings, then use DCB to block codes on sale, tagged or selected products — or everything during a sale.
How discount stacking happens
Stacking is when more than one price reduction applies to the same order: a compare-at sale price, plus an automatic discount, plus a code. Each one looks reasonable alone. Together they can push an order below cost.
Shopify discount combinations
Shopify lets you allow product, order and shipping discounts to combine. Check each discount's Combinations section and turn off what you don't need. But note: a sale price set by compare-at price isn't a “discount” to Shopify — so combinations can't prevent codes stacking on sale items.
A margin-safe stacking policy
- Sale items: no extra codes
- New arrivals and limited editions: no codes
- Free shipping codes: allowed
- VIP / staff codes: allowed everywhere
Enforce it with DCB
DCB turns that policy into rules: block codes on compare-at items, block by tag, block for selected products, and allow specific VIP codes. On Shopify Plus you can also block based on discount value and see rescued revenue in analytics.

Frequently asked questions
- Does Shopify allow discount stacking?
- Yes, if combinations are enabled. Sale prices from compare-at price always stack with codes unless you block it with an app like DCB.
- What is rescued revenue?
- On the Shopify Plus plan, DCB's analytics shows revenue protected by blocking discounts that would otherwise have applied.
