Exclude a Collection from Discount Codes in Shopify: Free Workaround vs App

By Viktoriia Pavlova · · 7 min read

Quick answer

Shopify can't exclude a collection from a code — it can only include one. The free workaround is an automated “full price only” collection that every code applies to. It works for a few codes; with many codes or apps, a blocking rule like DCB is faster and safer.

Shopify includes, it doesn't exclude

A discount code can apply to all products, specific collections or specific products. There's no “all products except…” option. So to keep a sale collection out, you flip the logic.

The free workaround (step by step)

  1. Go to Products → Collections → Create collection.
  2. Choose Automated, condition: Compare-at price is empty (or Tag is not equal to `sale`).
  3. Name it “Full price items”.
  4. Open each discount code and set Applies to → Specific collections → Full price items.
  5. Repeat for every new code you create.

Where the workaround breaks

  • Codes created by loyalty, referral and email apps often apply to all products and get missed
  • Every new code needs the same manual setup
  • Automated collections have condition limits, and mixing tags + price gets messy
  • Turning it off after a sale means editing every code again

The app way

DCB sits in front of all codes at checkout. Pick one rule — compare-at price, product tag or selected products — and every code, including future ones, follows it. You can also schedule it for the sale window only.

Which should you choose?

  • Under 5 codes, rare sales: the free collection workaround is fine
  • Many codes, apps creating codes, frequent sales: DCB saves hours and avoids missed codes

Frequently asked questions

Can you exclude a collection from a discount code in Shopify?
Not directly. You create a collection of eligible items and apply codes to it, or use an app like DCB to block codes for excluded items.
Does the workaround cover codes made by other apps?
Only if you edit those codes too. Many app-generated codes apply to all products by default.
